Commentary about the October 22, 2023 concert by Susan Davenny Wyner:

We start 'at the circus' with a fastmoving tour de force for the players. It's a vibrant Czech dance called a "Skocna" from the opera "The Bartered Bride"...

We then enter the beauty, mystery and drama of Schubert 's most beloved orchestral masterpiece, surprisingly left "unfinished".

After intermission we welcome back American composer Margaret Brouwer with "Sizzle". It's a razzle-dazzle piece, which grew out of her hearing snatches of hip-hop booming out of a car next to her when she was stopped at a traffic light!

By contrast, Yehudi's "Epilogue" is warmly emotional and lures us into a strange and beautiful landscape. These two American pieces create strikingly different worlds in a short span of time.

For the finale, the orchestra brings Bizet's exotic Carmen to life: the foreboding "fate" motive, swirling Spanish dances, harp and flute luring us into the mountains, solo bassoons chugging along in a march of the Dragoons (no not 'dragons' but French soldiers!), and of course the festive march as Toreadors parade for adoring crowds.
